Everyone knows what a rage Facebook is and who created this storm. Mark Zuckerberg, the honcho of this social media platform is like every other millennial, who dreamt of something innovative. Well, Zuckerberg, unlike some other aspiring entrepreneurs, did not lose the zeal and zest to make his dreams come true. What started in a dorm at the Harvard University in 2004, turned into a social storm; and today Facebook is the number 1 platform to connect for millions across the globe. A boy who dropped out of the Harvard University (where many literally dream to study) to pursue his idea of connecting the world; recently got his honorary degree from the institute after so many years; after actually connecting the globe. The CEO of Facebook returned to his University to receive his honorary degree and give a commencement speech. So, what are the management lessons that we can learn from Zuckerberg’s commencement speech? Let’s have a look at what the CEO of Facebook has to say.
Lessons from Mark Zuckerberg’s Commencement Speech
You Need to Get Started
Zuckerberg says that ideas, when they arise, are not fully formed. They start getting clearer as we work on them. He says that if he knew everything about how to connect with people, even before he started; he would have never built Facebook.
Very truly said, it is not really necessary to have everything planned out from the very beginning. Learning and formulating things around your idea takes place along the journey. Trust your idea and start working on it rather than sitting and contemplating on it.
Give Your Time in Charity
The CEO says that in history, the millennials are one of the most charitable generations. In just a year, Zuckerberg says, almost 3 out of 4 millennials in the U.S donated to charity; and almost 7 out of 10 raised money for charity. But he says that charity is not just about the money giving. One can also give his time to others; and believe us, this is the best lesson that we have come across in recent times.
Moreover, he says that if we give even an hour or maybe two per week; it will be enough to help someone reach their potential.
Be Prepared to be called Crazy
Well, this is a funny but a realistic advice by far from Zuckerberg’s commencement speech. He says that it is good to be an idealistic person. But you should be really prepared to get misunderstood. Moreover, he mentions that anyone who is working on a big vision will be called crazy, even if he ends up right.
So even if you are called crazy, do not lose motivation. Work hard and let this craziness lead you to success.
A Battle of Ideas
Zuckerberg’s commencement speech also included a crucial point regarding the current scenario. He said that this is actually a struggle of our time. What is the struggle? It’s about the forces of openness, global community, and freedom; against the forces of isolationism, nationalism, and authoritarianism. It’s about the forces for the flow of immigration, trade, and knowledge; against the forces that would slow them down.
Very aptly, he said that in this point of time, it is not a battle of nations. In fact, it is a battle of ideas.
Zuckerberg’s Harvard Commencement
This millennial, who after almost 12 years of dropping out is wiser, more experienced, and well, a few zeros richer; urged the fellow students for one important thing. He said that they should not underestimate impacts of the small actions and the importance of working towards the greater good.
Zuckerberg’s commencement speech did give a few lessons on management for all of us. Which, we say is even acceptable, coming out of experience of having an idea to connecting the world on a common platform in reality. Even if you are not really a Facebook fan, learn a lesson or two on management from Zuckerberg’s commencement speech and his wise words.
Well, apart from these lessons, we would like to congratulate the helm of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, on his honorary doctorate degree.
