The software behemoth is finally sick and tired of customers ignoring the company’s homegrown search engine and web browser. This is the reason why it has finally decided not to entertain people who’re using Google search browser or any other browser for that matter in Windows 10 via Cortana. From now onwards, every search performed by Cortana will be navigated using Bing and Edge browser.
The company has released an announcement saying that when individuals use Microsoft Cortana’s search box located on the taskbar of Windows 10, it will always lead to search results on Bing.
Prior to the announcement made by the company, Windows 10 platform offered customers to choose web browser and search engine of their preference while working with Microsoft Cortana. This, in return, allowed customers to leverage the benefits of Microsoft’s digital assistant while using the browser and search engine of their choice.
The decision is taken because Microsoft wants to ensure that everything works well together on Windows 10 platform. Also, the removal of third party web browsers and search engines will offer an integrated design for search experience on Windows 10. Originally, Cortana was designed to work using Bing search on the Edge browser. There’re a few tasks, which work best with Microsoft Cortana using its homegrown browsers. The company has specifically designed a few actions of Cortana to control the browser and search engines’ features.
The latest blog by the company reads, “Apparently when other search providers “circumvent the design of Windows 10”, the resulting experience is “compromised […] less reliable and predictable”.
The software company has also made it clear that we can still use the search engine and browser of our preference in Windows 10, it’s just that same choice won’t be offered in Microsoft Cortana.
It’s going to be fascinating to watch Satya Nadella’s company make this move, which surely isn’t an easy task to perform. It’s common news that Microsoft had to face a tough time while forcing Cortana to start using Google search browser. Now, it’ll have to do just the opposite.
For Windows 10, the company has been offering a lot of choices lately, though the digital assistant is one segment, which Microsoft absolutely wants to control and lock down.
“Unfortunately, as Windows 10 has grown in adoption and usage, we have seen some software programs circumvent the design of Windows 10 and redirect you to search providers that were not designed to work with Cortana,” General Manager of Search and Cortana Ryan Gavin mentioned in a blog post. “The result is a compromised experience that is less reliable and predictable.”
