As North America’s largest recycler, Waste Management managed more than 7 million tons of recyclable commodities in 2009. The company expects this amount of material they manage to increase to more than 20 million tons per year by the year 2020.

With the help of their waste recycling and management technologies, Waste Management Inc presently creates enough energy to power more than 1 million homes every year. By 2020, this renewable energy leader expects to double that output, creating enough energy to power more than 2 million homes.

Waste Management Inc had 119 landfill-gas-to-energy projects producing 540 megawatts of power by the end of 2009. This amount of energy is the equivalent of powering approximately 400,000 homes.

Wheelabrator Technologies, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Waste Management Inc., owns or operates 16 waste-to-energy plants and five independent power production facilities in the U.S. that generate enough energy to power more than 900,000 homes.

With around 1000 natural gas-powered trucks in their fleet, the company has also implemented technology that reduces the fuel burn of every truck in their fleet. When fully implemented, Waste Management Inc expects this to translate into a saving of 9 million gallons of fuel per year.

Through a joint venture with the Linde Group, Waste Management Inc has built a plant that converts landfill gas into over 13,000 gallons of liquefied natural gas per day for use as fuel in the company’s trucks.
